Trigger Latches
Safety and security are necessary for several applications and, in some cases, are a requirement. Sometimes, tie-downs, strap hinges, and cam locks aren’t enough. Latches are mechanical fasteners that join two or more objects together while allowing them to be separated regularly. Because of their versatility, reliability, and effectiveness, latches are commonly used in various industries and for multiple purposes.
A trigger latch is a popular type that has a lever resembling a trigger and is installed on rotating surfaces, such as doors. Sierra Pacific Engineering and Products (SPEP) makes the highest quality industrial hardware for OEM manufacturers. Our selection consists of raised and flush-style trigger latches for use on buses, RVs, trucks/trailers, toolboxes, and electronic and HVAC enclosures.
A great feature of these latches is that they mount relatively flush to the surface of the enclosure to keep a slim profile. Discover more about the key features and benefits of trigger latches. Explore our selection at SPEP.

What is a Trigger Latch?
Trigger latches are latching components with a simple design for convenient function. When the trigger of the lever latch is pushed, the pawl that engages the door frame or keeper drops down, allowing the door to be opened. At the same time, the lever moves upward, where it can be grasped as a handle to pull open the door. These latching mechanisms secure enclosures, keeping them shut and their contents protected.
With varying mounting kits available for purchase, trigger latches are effective security solutions for metal or wood applications. Additionally, trigger latches can be purchased with or without an integrated lock. The locks can be made so that all triggers have the same key or one of 10 different key codes.
There are several types of trigger latches for different uses. The most common variations include:
Raised Trigger Latch
A raised trigger latch is a compression latch that has a raised trigger to make it easier to actuate. They are used to hold shut doors, panels, or covers, and can also compress a gasket to seal out moisture, dirt, and other external elements. Raised trigger latches are frequently used to secure compartments on buses, RVs, trucks, trailers, and electronic and HVAC enclosures.
Flush-Style Trigger Latch
A flush trigger latch is a type of compression latch that mounts flush to a surface and opens doors and panels. They are often used in enclosures, such as industrial cabinets, HVAC systems, trucks, and marine applications.
Key Features of Trigger Latches
Trigger latches make for excellent security measures for a variety of reasons. The simple, low-profile design mounts flush to the surface of the enclosure for a slim appearance that doesn’t stick out or protrude.
Trigger latches provide a reliable sense of security. Some latches can be locked with a key or tool for enhanced measures. Compression latches use gaskets to create a seal that keeps out dust and moisture. Some models are suitable for NEMA 4 and IP65 applications. Furthermore, trigger-lock latches can be customized for specific applications with different bolt and trigger offsets.
At SPEP, we have designed our trigger latches with a full range of options to best fit your needs. We offer lever latches with a raised trigger button, for easier operation, or flush, for a more streamlined appearance.
Our inventory of trigger latches includes two basic sizes:
- Short arm: For grips between .04 inches to 0.95 inches
- Long arm: For grips from 0.91 inches to 1.81 inches
Trigger latches are available in three finishes, matte black, polished chrome, and textured chrome, to blend with your product's design.
How to Choose the Right Trigger Latch
While all trigger latches are equipped with a trigger-like lever – which is what differentiates them from other types of latches – different styles are available. When searching for your ideal trigger latch, consider the following:
Locking Trigger Latches vs. Non-Locking Trigger Latches
Some trigger latches feature a built-in lock. The key locking mechanism will remain secure unless a specific key is inserted and turned. Think about the contents you want protected inside. Are they valuable items? If so, you may want to invest in a trigger latch with a lock.
Materials
The materials that make up a trigger latch can play a significant role in which is ideal for your desired use. Most trigger latches are made from strong, durable materials that are resistant to corrosion. They are available in chrome plated, black powder coat, and more options. Consider how you will use the trigger latch to determine the materials that best suit your needs.
Grip Range
Another important consideration is grip range. The grip range is the distance the trigger latch’s arm can reach. The longer the grip range, the farther the trigger latch’s arm will extend.
