About
Sierra Pacific Engineering and Products (SPEP) manufactures a broad array of access hardware, including draw latches. For over 30 years, we have been manufacturing high-quality draw and tension latches in accordance with the most stringent production standards.
What Is a Draw Latch?
A draw latch leverages tension to join two objects together tightly. Also known as tension latches, draw latches are commonly used to secure lids, doors, and enclosures. They are extremely user-friendly and can be activated with minimal effort, thanks to their push/pull function.
Despite exhibiting exceptional ease of use, draw latches provide a secure connection between the two components they join.
What Are the Two Parts of a Draw Latch?
The two main components of a draw latch are the blade and the keeper. Draw latches also feature a hinge. The blade is a wire-formed loop or hooked plate. The keeper receives the blade and is also a hooked plate. The blade pivots along the hinge.
When a user activates the draw latch, the blade is hooked (connected to) the keeper. It is clamped into place, which creates tension on the enclosure lid or door.
Benefits and Uses of Draw Latches
Draw latches provide some definitive benefits over other types of latches, which is why they are used for a multitude of applications. Some of the most popular use cases for draw latches include:
Heavy equipment and industrial machinery
HVAC systems
Electrical enclosures
Cargo containers and trailers
Displays and exhibits
Lids or storage compartments
Garden equipment
Agricultural machinery
Draw latches are used in so many industries because of many beneficial characteristics.
Easy to Install
Draw latches can be installed very quickly, making them an ideal choice for large-scale manufacturing projects. If you need to produce a large volume of manufactured goods and want to keep your workflow simple, draw latches are a great access hardware option.
Cost-Effective
Draw latches are also incredibly cost-effective. They are far cheaper than other common latches, such as compression latches. That said, they are best suited for simplistic applications where a tight, waterproof seal is not required.
Simple to Use
Users can easily engage or disengage draw latches with a single hand. They can engage draw latches by pushing or pulling the blade over the keeper. To disengage the latch, they simply need to push the blade away from the keeper, thereby separating the two components.
Easy to Maintain
Due to their simplicity, draw latches are incredibly easy to maintain. They require virtually zero maintenance, as they don’t have any complex parts or components. If a draw latch malfunctions, it can easily be replaced at a minimal cost.
Material and Finish Options
Sierra Pacific Engineering and Products offers draw latches in several materials, including:
Steel
304SS
Stainless steel
Die-cast zinc
316 SS
Select materials are available in different finishes, which may include:
Zinc-plated
Electropolished
Black
