Weld-On Hinges
When your project calls for door hardware that exhibits exceptional corrosion resistance, unmatched durability, and a long service life, weld-on hinges are an excellent choice. Sierra Pacific Engineering and Products (SPEP) offers an extensive line of weld-on hinges available in a broad array of sizes, materials, and finishes.

About Our Weld-On Hinges
Our industrial weld-on hinges are often used on gates, commercial doors, and other heavy-duty applications, and due to their reliability, they are often found throughout different environments and climates, including both indoor and outdoor applications.
In total, our digital catalog includes nearly 100 different weld-on hinges and hinge components, and — in addition to providing a wide variety of standard weld-on hinges — SPEP’s engineering team can also design, prototype, and fabricate custom access hardware to meet the unique demands of your project.
The Basics of Weld-on Hinges
Weld-on hinges typically consist of three components, which are a pin, (two) leaves, and (at least two) knuckles. The leaves are the flat parts of the hinge that are affixed to the door and door jamb or wall. The knuckles are cylindrical portions that are attached to each leaf. Once aligned, the pin is slid through the center of the knuckles to form the hinge.
Weld-on hinges are sometimes referred to as bullet hinges or barrel hinges, given that the unique shape of the barrel (the structure formed by the knuckles and pin) closely resembles the taper of a rifle barrel.
Be that as it may, perhaps the most notable attribute of weld-on hinges is the leaves. Whereas a traditional hinge has screw holes in each leaf, a weld-on hinge does not because it is attached to the door and door jamb or wall via welds, not bolts or screws.
Industrial Weld-on Hinges vs. Standard Hinges
Standard hinges include a pin, two leaves, and several knuckles, just like weld-on hinges, but there are a few fundamental differences between each type of hinge.
Most notably, weld-on hinges are welded to the door and wall/door jamb, whereas standard hinges are screwed or bolted in place. Butt hinges are also mortised into the door and door jamb, a mortise being a recess that is cut into the door to receive the hinge leaf.
Another key difference between the two is the type of materials that they can each be installed on. Standard hinges can be installed on wood, composite, or metal doors, whereas weld-on hinges can only be attached to metal doors.
Advantages of Heavy-Duty Weld-On Hinges
Weld-on hinges provide several clear benefits over traditional hinges, especially when used in heavy-duty or industrial applications. Specifically, weld-on hinges provide the following qualities:
Superior Strength: Weld-on hinges are fused to the door that they are actuating, which means they provide better strength and durability than a traditional hinge.
Corrosion Resistance: Weld-on hinges are made from durable, strong materials that offer a high level of corrosion resistance, thereby making them a good fit for outdoor applications and harsh environments.
Less Maintenance: Weld-on hinges require minimal maintenance, as there are no screws to retighten, meaning the hinge will remain securely in place, even with frequent use.
Better Security: Theoretically, someone could remove a standard door by unscrewing its hinges. Weld-on hinges, however, feature a tamper-resistant design, as they must be removed with a cutting torch.
If you need to mount access hardware to a metal door, weld-on hinges are often the better option.
SPEP Weld-On Hinge Material and Finish Options
Weld-on hinges are only available in steel, but SPEP does offer two finish options; milled and clear coat. Each provides its own unique benefits, which is why it is important to explore both choices when ordering your SPEP weld-on hinges.
If you need assistance selecting the size and finish of your weld-on hinges, SPEP’s expert sales team can assist. Our talented staff members have served clients in a wide range of industries, and they can leverage that abundance of expertise to help you find the right access hardware for your intended application.
Industry-Specific Use Cases
Sierra Pacific Engineering and Products’ weld-on hinges are used in several key industries. In particular, our industrial weld-on hinges can be found on products such as:
Gates
Work trucks
Livestock trailers
Dump/cargo trailers
Spray booths
These are just a few of the most common use cases for weld-on hinges, though; SPEP hinges and other access hardware are trusted by clients in a wide array of other industries, including healthcare and power generation.
