Butt Hinges

The key components of a butt hinge are the leaves, pin, and knuckles. The leaves are the flat components. One side is affixed to the wall or door jamb, and the other is secured to the moving component, such as a lid or door. 

Each leaf has a set of cylindrical knuckles. The knuckles on one leaf interlace with the knuckles on the other leaf. The pin slides through the center of the knuckles, adjoining the leaves and facilitating movement. 

Like a traditional hinge, a butt hinge has either three or four knuckles. However, standard continuous hinges are mounted directly onto a door frame and door. Conversely, butt hinges are mortised or inset into the surface of the door and frame. This unique installation method provides added strength and durability. 

There are three broad categories of industrial butt hinges, including plain, ball-bearing, and spring-loaded.

Plain butt hinges are best suited for light-duty applications. These pieces of access hardware are extremely simple to install and require minimal maintenance. 

Ball-bearing butt hinges feature lubricated bearings, which are located between the knuckles. These ball bearings reduce friction, making them suitable for use with heavy doors. 

Spring-loaded butt hinges have a unique mechanism that ensures a door closes completely after each use. This type of hinge is often installed on screen or patio doors.
