At Sierra Pacific Engineering and Products (SPEP), we are dedicated to providing top-tier access hardware solutions for OEMs and industrial clients. Among our vast range of products, the slam latch stands out as one of our most popular components, especially among recreational vehicle (RV) manufacturers.

Our RV slam latches are engineered for easy installation, supported by clear instructions, and user-friendly designs making them ideal for RV doors and enclosures.  In this guide, you’ll learn how to install slam latch on RV doors and enclosures.

Understanding Slam Latches and RV Applications

Before getting into slam latch installation, it’s helpful to explore the benefits of these versatile pieces of access hardware.

Use and Function

A slam latch is a type of access mechanism that allows users to secure a door or panel by pushing it shut. You won’t have to turn or manipulate the mechanism — simply “slamming” it closed locks it into place. The one-handed operation makes these pieces of hardware incredibly convenient for RV owners, who often juggle multiple tasks like carrying heavy items and unloading their vehicle.

SPEP clients frequently use one of two types of slam latches on their RV designs: the push-button and paddle options. Push-button latches are easy to operate, making them a great fit for smaller compartments. To release the mechanism, push the button. Paddle latches offer a larger handle, making them suitable for larger doors and panels. You pull the paddle to release the locking mechanism and slam the door shut when you are done.

Benefits of Using Slam Latches on an RV

Sierra Pacific Engineering and Products’ (SPEP) slam latches provide several key advantages for recreational vehicle manufacturers. Some examples include:

  • Convenience: Enable quick and effortless securing of doors and compartments
  • Security: Provides a secure closure that can help prevent unauthorized access
  • Durability: Designed to withstand frequent use and the demands of travel

Manufacturers trust SPEP slam latches will hold up to the rigors of daily use while delivering flawless performance.

Preparing for Installation

Before installing your slam latch, you’ll need to gather the appropriate tools and materials, such as:

  • Drill and drill bits
  • Screwdrivers
  • Screws or bolts (included in our kits)
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Safety glasses and gloves

Park the vehicle on a stable, level surface to avoid any accidents. Engage the parking brake and consider using wheel chocks for extra stability. Always wear safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself from flying debris, such as flakes of material from the door.

Next, identify where you will install the slam latch. You should choose a place where it can easily be reached while being mindful of security concerns. Measure the distance from your location on the door to the nearest wall to ensure the latch won’t be too far or too close. Then, mark the area with a pencil to guarantee accurate placement.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Before drilling any holes, use your measuring tape to determine the exact location you want. Using the latch as a guide, mark the spot where you’ll be drilling the holes.

Put on safety glasses and drill the necessary holes based on the markings. Make sure to use the appropriate diameter drill bit, as indicated in our instructions. Avoid drilling too deep as well, as doing so might damage the RV.

Next, attach the latch using the screws we provide. Be careful not to over-tighten them, which could strip the screws or damage the latch. Test the hardware to check that the latch catches properly and holds the door shut.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even with careful installation, you may encounter a few common issues during your slam latch installation process. Here’s how to troubleshoot them:

Latch Misalignment

If your latch doesn’t align with the catch, loosen the screws slightly and adjust the hardware’s position. In instances where your components are significantly misaligned, you may need to adjust both the catch and the latch slightly.

Difficult Operation

If you have trouble operating the latch, check to make sure there aren’t any obstructions in the mechanism. Lubricate the latch with an approved substance to ensure smooth operation.

Leaks or Gaps

If you notice leaks or gaps around the latch, first check that your door panel and frame are properly aligned. Adding weather stripping around the door or panel can also help reinforce a tight seal.

How to Best Maintain a Slam Latch on Your RV

Sierra Pacific Engineering and Products (SPEP) carefully designs our access hardware for optimal longevity and durability. By following a regular maintenance routine, you can maximize the lifespan of your SPEP equipment.

Here are some essential maintenance tips to help you get the most out of your RV access hardware:

  • Perform Regular Cleaning: Periodically clean the latch to keep it free from dirt and debris
  • Lubricate: Apply a silicone-based lubricant every few months
  • Inspect for Wear and Tear: Regularly inspect the hardware for signs of damage
  • Check Alignment: Ensure the catch and latch don’t loosen over time
