Bolt latches, also known as crossbars, are the most basic type of latch, because they use a physical object - the post, or bolt - to restrict the movement of a door. This simple concept has been in use for thousands of years, and original equipment manufacturers today continue to specify this type of latch for trucks, trailers, RVs, sheds, spray booths, buses, crates, and marine applications.

Historically, a bolt latch consisted simply of a bolt, supported by cleats mounted on the door and on the neighboring wall. To lock a door, the bolt was slid part way out from the wall and through one or more door cleats, thereby preventing the door from being opened.Today’s industrial bolt latches are a bit more refined, but the same concepts apply. A metal posts slides through metal brackets attached to the adjacent surface, or else a mortise to fit the bolt is inset in a surface strike plate on the door’s edge. When the door is closed, the post extends into the door cleats or mortise to prevent the door from opening.

SPEP offers several types of bolt latches, including barrel, spring pull, slam, explosion, and rotary latches. A spring bolt latch uses a compressed spring to keep the bolt in the locked position, while also preventing it from pulling too far out of the latch when opened.

Our bolt latches come in aluminum, steel, stainless steel, cast iron, or thermoplastic. We offer electropolished, chrome plated, zinc plated, blue zinc plated, yellow zinc plated, electro black painted, mill, and passivated finishes to coordinate with your product’s design.
